Tariff reform review underway at Alderney Electricity
14 May 2026 | News
Alderney Electricity has begun a review of how electricity tariffs and system charges are structured across the island, as part of longer-term planning for a fair, reliable and sustainable electricity system.
The review will look at how the costs of maintaining Alderney’s electricity infrastructure are shared between users of the network. As a small island system, a significant proportion of the costs involved in generating and distributing electricity are fixed, regardless of how much electricity individual properties use.
Managing Director Chris MacGregor explained that the work is intended to ensure the system remains fair and resilient as energy use patterns change over time.
The review may include the introduction or adjustment of a fixed system charge, along with consideration of how underused or seasonal properties contribute towards the upkeep of the network. No decisions have been made at this stage, and Alderney Electricity says the process will involve further analysis, financial modelling and community engagement before any proposals are finalised.
Chris said:
“Our intention is not to introduce sudden or unnecessary increases, but to put in place a structure that is fair, understandable, and capable of supporting the Island’s needs over the long term.”
The company says it will continue to communicate openly as the review progresses and provide opportunities for feedback from the community.
