About us

Proud to serve Alderney

Our role is simple to describe but complex to deliver:
we keep the island powered, safely, reliably and affordably.

Our system

A small-island electricity system

Electricity systems on small islands operate very differently from those on mainland networks. Supply and demand must be balanced locally, at every moment. There is no external network to draw on if something changes suddenly. This makes careful planning and investment essential.

It also means that some aspects of island electricity, such as occasional outages or the continued use of diesel generation, are part of operating a safe and stable system.

Vital work

Keeping the island running, every day

Our work spans the full electricity system from generation through to customer services:

importing fuels to the island

generating electricity for the island

maintaining the high- and low-voltage network

managing substations and infrastructure

supporting renewable energy connections

providing metering, billing and customer services

storing and supplying fuels including diesel, kerosene and marine diesel

delivering electrical, engineering and contracting services

Together, these responsibilities underpin daily life on Alderney.

Part of island life

Here for the community in all conditions

Electricity is central to everyday life on Alderney. Homes, businesses and public services all depend on it, and everyone on our team lives here too. We're part of the same community we serve.

Our role extends beyond the electricity system. We support the wider wellbeing of the island through involvement with charities, sports clubs, the local school, healthcare, hospitality and more.

When severe weather hits or faults occur, we work to keep the island supported, informed and safe. Much of our network runs underground, which helps protect it from storm damage, and long-term investment in our generators and systems has significantly reduced the frequency of island-wide outages.

During Storm Goretti, the island maintained power through extreme conditions. That's what long-term investment in resilient infrastructure looks like in practice.

Looking ahead

Planning carefully for Alderney’s future

We are undertaking a programme of work to strengthen the foundations of Alderney's electricity system and build self-sufficiency. This includes modernising tariffs, improving infrastructure, introducing smart metering and enabling the network for renewable energy.

These changes are designed to ensure the system remains reliable and financially sustainable as energy technology evolves.
