Electricity supply

Here to help
We generate and supply electricity to homes, businesses and public services across Alderney.
Because the island operates its own self-contained electricity system, everything is produced and managed locally. Our focus is simple: to provide a reliable supply every day, while maintaining the system that supports the island as a whole.
Whether you need tariff information, help with billing, or support with your account, our team is here to help. If you would rather speak to someone directly, you’re always welcome to call us or visit us in person.

Electricity charges
Electricity on Alderney is currently charged using a range of tariffs — the most suitable one for you depends on your property type, whether you use electric heating or hot water, how much electricity you typically use.
For most homes, the main choice today is between Tariff A and Tariff C.
Tariff A has a higher unit rate with no standing charge, and tends to suit lower or seasonal use.
Tariff C has a lower unit rate with a standing charge based on property size, and is usually more suitable for full-time residents. We also offer lower-cost tariffs for water heating and storage heating, which require separate meters and suitable equipment.
Tariff Reform. We are currently exploring Tariff Reform, From January 2027, we are moving to a simplified two-part tariff for all customers, covering a system charge and a consumption charge. We will share further detail as this develops.
Current tariffs
Tariff A
Flat rate of 0.3981 pence per unit
Minimum charges applicable to Scale A £9.95p
Everyone on Tariff A is required to pay, as a minimum in respect of each separate service, a minimum quarterly charge (equivalent to 25 units) in addition to meter rent
Tariff B
Water heating: 0.1386p per unit. All water heating apparatus must be of the storage type, approved by AEL, and permanently wired on a separate circuit. Usage is metered separately; standard meter rental applies.
Storage heating (off-peak): 0.1386p per unit. Supply is restricted to off-peak hours: 11pm–7am, with a mid-day boost from 12.30pm–3.30pm (one hour later during British Summer Time).
B tariffs are no longer available to new customers.
Tariff C
Domestic Two-Part Tariff 0.2469 pence per unit
Fixed Quarterly Standing Charge up to 6 assessed rooms £9.66p per room
Next 4 accessed rooms £7.27p per room
The minimum assessment is the equivalent of 3 rooms
Rooms 250 sq ft or more count as 2 rooms
Meter information
Meter Rentals
All properties on Tariff A pay a meter rental charge. From 2027, all properties will pay a meter rental charge and this will be phased in as smart meters are deployed.
Single phase per quarter per meter £2.01p per meter
Three phase per quarter per meter £6.03p per meter
Card Meters
Card Meters will be phased out over 2026 and 2027 to be replaced with new digital pre-payment meters. The most common tariff used with card meters is Tariff A, but they can also be deployed for water heating on Tariff B.
Smart meters
From August 2026, AEL will begin rolling out smart meters to improve the efficiency of electricity metering and give customers clearer information about their energy use.
The rollout will also support better network management, faster fault identification, improved planning for Alderney’s future electricity needs and, in time, enable AEL to offer more flexible tariffs.

Fuel Cost Component
We generate all our electricity by burning ultra-low sulphur diesel. The cost of this ULSD is added to customers' invoices as an additional Fuel Cost Component (FCC). This is determined by the wholesale price of ULSD when purchased in bulk.
Current FCC price is: 0.2909 pence per unit
Details of the current FCC and all other charges can also be obtained from the Company Office at Maison des Venelles, Venelles des Gaudion, Alderney, GY9 3TW

Charges and deposits
Meter rental is charged quarterly. Charges vary depending on your meter type.
A security deposit is required when setting up a new account. Domestic accounts require £500; business accounts a minimum of £1,500. Customers are typically asked to set up a standing order to cover ongoing usage. We will explain all of this clearly when you join or move property.

Applying for a new or upgraded supply
If you are planning to build a new property, extend an existing one, or install high-demand equipment such as an electric cooker, sauna, heat pump or EV charger, contact us before work begins.
The existing supply to your property may not be large enough to support the additional load. AEL will review your requirements, check available capacity and advise whether an upgrade or alteration is needed.
If AEL is not carrying out the electrical installation, your appointed contractor can help you complete the required form. Completed forms can be emailed to electrical@alderney-elec.com or delivered by post or in person to our office.

Planning for the future
We are working to modernise Alderney’s electricity system — introducing smart metering, improving network monitoring and preparing for increasing levels of renewable energy.
Our focus is on steady progress that keeps the system reliable and affordable while the island’s energy mix evolves.
Dial before you dig
Working safely near electricity
If you are planning any digging or groundworks, check for underground electricity cables before you start. This applies to homeowners and contractors alike.
Contact us before you begin and we can check records, advise on likely cable locations and arrange a site visit if needed. This is a free service.
When working near cables, assume they are present even if not visible, use safe digging techniques and consider exposing services by hand before using machinery. Electricity cables should always be treated as live.
