First solar power generated by Alderney Electricity
10 June 2026 | News
Alderney Electricity has generated solar power for the first time, marking an important milestone in the island's transition towards a more diverse and resilient energy system.
On 20 May 2026, a newly installed rooftop solar array at the company's offices began generating renewable electricity. While modest in scale, the project represents the first step in a wider programme of renewable energy development planned for the coming years.
The installation includes battery storage and will help the company better understand how solar generation and energy storage interact with Alderney's electricity network. The performance of the system will be monitored closely as part of an evidence-based approach to increasing renewable energy on the island.
Rather than introducing large-scale renewable generation immediately, Alderney Electricity says it is taking a phased approach that allows new technologies to be integrated safely while maintaining the reliability and stability of the island's electricity supply.
Future projects are expected to include additional rooftop solar installations, larger renewable energy schemes and the commissioning of a battery energy storage system at the power station.
Managing Director Chris MacGregor said the project was an important first step in a much longer journey.
“This installation may be small, but it represents the beginning of a wider programme of renewable energy development for Alderney. By building capability and understanding step by step, we can ensure the transition is delivered safely, responsibly and in a way that supports the long-term resilience of the island's electricity system.”
The company says further renewable energy projects will be announced as development work progresses.
